What is Gum Decay?
Gum decay is a loose reference to a disease of the gums, where there are too many bacteria that are attacking the gums and they cause the gums to decay as a result.
The most common occurrences of gum decay are found in two types of common gum diseases: gingivitis or periodontal disease. Gum decay can be prevented, but it requires a firm daily commitment to strong oral heath. Gum decay is the leading causes of tooth decay and tooth loss worldwide, and it’s estimated that at least 80% of people around the world suffer from some form of gum decay or another.
What Causes Gum Decay?
Gum decay is caused by bacteria attacking the gums and the lining of the gums. If left untreated or unchecked, the bacteria infect the pockets of the gums, causing them to enlarge with infection. The gums will try to ward off and attack the infection, but without proper treatment and effective daily care, the gums will ultimately cede to the gum decay, and will recede and become infected as a result. Bacteria are the primary nemesis for gums, and our mouth is an ideal breeding ground for them because it is warm, dark and wet, and the foods that we consume contains sugars that the bacteria feed off, emitting an acidic excretion that attacks the gums and promotes gum decay.

The best methods that you can take to prevent gum decay is by taking proper care of your mouth and by committing to a strong oral hygiene regiment. In some cases, a dentist may prescribe antibiotics to combat infections that occur in infected gums due to gum decay.
What is Gum Cancer?
Gum cancer is a cancer of the mouth that affects the gums, also called oral cancer. While most people will never suffer from oral cancer, certain persons will. The most at risk persons are those who abuse alcohol, habitually use tobacco products or abuse recreational drugs; it can also be caused by UV exposure or autoimmune diseases like HIV. Gum cancer can only be diagnosed by a specialist, and there are some treatment methods available that can eradicate it.

What Can You Do to Treat Gum Cancer?
The most common method of treatment is called chemoprevention. Medicine.net – a leading cancer resource website – describes this method of treatment as, “The use of drugs, vitamins, or other agents to prevent or delay the growth of cancer or to keep it from coming back. Tobacco users who have had oral cancer often develop second cancers in the oral cavity or nearby areas, including the nose, throat, vocal cords, esophagus, and windpipe. Studies of chemoprevention in oral cancer are under way, including chemoprevention of leukoplakia and erythroplakia.”
Are Gum Decay and Gum Caner Linked?
There are conflicting reports as to whether or not gum decay and gum cancer are linked. This is because gum cancer will promote gum decay, but it is not necessarily the other way around. It’s safe to presume that a person who uses tobacco products is already at more risk of gum cancer and gum decay, and those who do not properly care for their gums are more at risk of gum decay and gum cancer. But in reality, they are two separate issues that share some similarities. While gum cancer will promote gum decay, there is no proof or conclusive studies that gum decay actually promotes gum cancer as of yet.
